Passing the Chemical Abortion Pill Bill & Stopping Opposition
Iowa’s Heartbeat Law is designed to protect every unborn baby with a detectable heartbeat. Unfortunately, out-of-state entities have made a mockery of our laws by shipping chemical abortion pills directly to Iowa doorsteps — often without a valid prescription. Beyond ending the innocent lives of unborn babies, these powerful drugs carry severe health risks to the aborting mothers. Many experts now agree that the dangers of serious complications have been vastly underreported.
While meaningful Life-at-Conception legislation remains IRTL’s ultimate goal, the votes simply are not yet there in Iowa’s General Assembly. As such, our main legislative focus this year was advocating for Iowa House File 2788 — The Chemical Abortion Pill Bill.
What does HF 2788 Do? This important legislation mandates that abortion-inducing drugs can only be dispensed directly to a patient while within a physical Iowa healthcare setting and only by an authorized physician — no more mail-order abortion pills sent from unscrupulous out-of-staters. More importantly, abortionists who violate this law can be held civilly liable for damages — in other words, violators can be sued.
The critical question now becomes… If an out-of-state doctor — say, in New York, Massachusetts, or California — mails abortion pills to a pregnant woman in Iowa, will these penalties be enforceable in these liberal blue states that have “shield laws”? Only time will tell. The issue will be decided in the federal court system. Pray for God’s will.
IRTL wishes to extend our deepest gratitude to the legislators who fought to get this across the finish line, and to Gov. Kim Reynolds for signing it into law. …
Please note: The dangers of chemical abortion drugs have been vastly understated — according to recent scientific data published by the Ethics and Public Policy Center — these pills frequently devastate the health and well-being of the women and girls who take them. The research indicates that chemical abortion pills are 22 times more dangerous than their warning labels say — this is based on more than 800,000 pill-based abortions from 2017 to 2023 and indicates that more than 10% of women who used the drug experienced adverse events within 45 days
Iowa Right to Life also successfully helped hold the line against a wave of extreme, anti-life legislation. The following bills were blocked from advancing in 2026:
- HF 2455: An attempt to completely repeal Iowa’s Heartbeat Law.
- HF 2262: A dangerous push to legalize physician-assisted suicide.
- SF 2057: A sweeping measure to codify a “right” to unrestricted birth control.
- SJR 2003: A radical resolution to amend the Iowa Constitution to establish a permanent “right” to abortion.
While none of these efforts stood a fighting chance in the current legislature, their introduction proves that the pro-choicers will never stop trying to erode the culture of LIFE in Iowa.
Thank you for standing for LIFE in 2026!
