Release: Immediate

DES MOINES—September 10, 2008— The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is taking public comments through September 20, 2008 on a new rule to protect doctors and other health care professionals.

Planned Parenthood employs only seven doctors in Iowa.

Dr. Meryl Severson,MD, OBGyn – Council Bluffs
Dr. Thomas Ross, DO, Family Practice – Des Moines
Dr. Linda Railsback, MD, OBGyn – Des Moines (does not do abortions)
Dr. Mary Doyle, MD, General Practice – Iowa City
Dr. Susan Haskell, DO, Family Practice – Des Moines
Dr. Joseph Freund, MD, General Practice – Des Moines
Dr. Sascha Parsons, MD, Family Practice – Boone

Now Planned Parenthood wants to force more doctors, nurses and other health care professionals into the abortion industry – against their will.
Planned Parenthood has a big campaign opposing a rule from the Bush Administration and HHS to protect the jobs of health care professionals who refuse to take part in the bloody business of killing babies and destroying women’s lives.

The Conscience Rule, introduced by HHS on August 21, 2008, applies to medical organizations that receive government funding. Violations could result in the loss of government funding.

HHS’s Conscience Rule was created in reaction to a new policy by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) that HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt said in a letter to the ACOG on March 14, 2008, “would force physicians to violate their conscience by referring patients for abortions or taking other objectionable actions, or risk losing their board certification.”

Doctors, nurses and other health care professionals have the right to say no to performing or assisting in abortions and other procedures they find morally objectionable.

Read the HHS document for yourself.
